St Marys is the oldest working suburb in the area, built up around its railway station since the 1860s, and it’s now in the middle of a fresh wave of redevelopment as older blocks make way for new townhouses and units. That mix of genuinely old housing and brand new builds sitting side by side is exactly the kind of contrast I work across all the time in Penrith.
The original homes are well past the point where a switchboard with ceramic fuses and no safety switches is just an old-fashioned quirk, it’s a real safety gap worth closing.
The newer townhouses and units going up as part of the renewal tend to come with different questions instead: enough power points and circuits for how people actually live now, and increasingly, whether the board can take an EV charger.
St Marys gets the same brutal western Sydney summers as the rest of Penrith, with none of the sea breeze that keeps the coast a few degrees cooler.
